A local state representative testified before the Kentucky House Judiciary Committee about a bill he's sponsoring that would make sure people charged with attempted murder of police officers or firefighters would serve at least 85 percent of their sentence.

State Rep. Gerald Watkins, of Paducah, testified before the House Judiciary Committee about the legislation — House Bill 137 — Wednesday. The committee unanimously passed the bill, which will next be considered on the House floor.

When speaking to the committee, Watkins testified that people convicted of that crime are currently eligible for parole after serving only 20 percent of their sentence.
